Piping Estimating Services for Mechanical, Plumbing & Process Systems

Two pipe runs of the same length can carry very different labor. Copper with press fittings goes in quickly. Schedule 80 carbon steel with welded joints takes far longer per foot, and a run full of fittings takes longer still. A piping estimate that measures footage and stops there is missing most of the labor.

Our piping estimating services take off pipe by system, material, size, and joining method, with fittings, valves, supports, and testing counted, so labor reflects how the pipe is actually installed.

Joining Method Drives Labor

How the pipe is joined is often the biggest single factor in piping labor:

Welded

(butt weld, socket weld): labor commonly counted by welds or by diameter-inches (pipe diameter × number of welds)

Threaded

labor by joint, rising with pipe size

Grooved

(mechanical couplings): faster than welding for larger sizes

Press-fit

very fast for copper and some steel systems

Soldered and brazed

copper systems, by joint

Solvent-welded

PVC and CPVC

Mechanical joint / no-hub

cast iron drainage

We count joints and fittings so labor can be priced the way your company prices it: by weld, by diameter-inch, by joint, or by your labor units.

Fittings, Valves & Specialties

  • Elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, unions, and caps by size and type
  • Valves by type (gate, globe, ball, butterfly, check, balancing, control) and size
  • Strainers, expansion joints, flexible connectors, and gauges
  • Backflow preventers, pressure regulators, and meters
  • Equipment connections

Supports, Testing & Insulation

Hangers and supports

by type and spacing, including trapeze and seismic bracing where required

Sleeves

through walls and floors

Testing

hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure tests, flushing, and disinfection for domestic water

Identification

pipe labels and valve tags

Shop Fabrication vs Field Installation

On larger jobs, pipe is often fabricated into spools in a shop and installed in the field. That shifts welds from the field to the shop, where productivity is higher. If you fabricate, tell us: we can separate shop and field joints so each is priced at the right rate.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is piping labor estimated?

Usually by the joint or weld, scaled for pipe size, material, and joining method. Many contractors use diameter-inches for welded pipe.

Do you estimate process piping?

Yes, including stainless and chemical systems.

Do you count welds?

Yes, for welded systems, broken out by size and type.

Is plumbing included?

Yes, plumbing piping systems are included; plumbing fixtures can be priced as part of a full plumbing estimate.
